The main components of the chiller are the compressor, the condenser, the evaporator, the expansion valve, the power panel, the control unit and the water box. In this article we will learn how to place them in the cooler and briefly what their purpose is.

YouTube video tutorial at the bottom of the page.

Chillers can be found in most medium to large buildings and will produce the chilled water used to provide air conditioning. There are many types of refrigerators, but they all have the same main components.

Compressor:

The compressor is the prime mover, it creates a pressure difference to move the refrigerant through the system. There are different designs of refrigeration compressors, the most common being centrifugal, screw, scroll and reciprocating types. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is always located between the evaporator and the condenser. It is usually partially insulated and will have an electric motor attached as the driving force, which will be mounted internally or externally. Compressors can be extremely noisy, usually a constant deep hum with a high pitched sound superimposed, hearing protection should be worn near the chiller.

Condenser:

The condenser is located after the compressor and before the expander. The purpose of the condenser is to remove heat from the refrigerant that has been recovered in the evaporator. There are two main types of condensers, air-cooled and water-cooled.

Water-cooled condensers will repeatedly alternate "condenser water" between the cooling tower and the condenser, the hot refrigerant entering the condenser from the compressor will transfer its heat to this water which is transported to the cooling tower and rejected from the building. . The refrigerant and water do not mix, they are kept separated by a pipe wall, the water flows into the pipe and the refrigerant flows out.

Air-cooled chiller condensers work slightly differently, they don't use a cooling tower but instead blow air through the exposed condenser tubing with the refrigerant this time circulating inside the tube.

Expansion valve:

The expansion valve is located between the condenser and the evaporator. Its purpose is to expand the refrigerant by reducing its pressure and increasing its volume, which will allow it to capture unwanted heat in the evaporator. There are many different types of expansion valves, the most common being the thermal expansion valve, pilot operated thermal expansion valve, electronic expansion valve, and fixed orifice expansion valve.

Evaporator:

The evaporator is located between the expansion valve and the compressor, its purpose is to collect unwanted heat from the building and transfer it to the refrigerant so it can be sent to the cooling tower and rejected. The water is cooled as the refrigerant extracts heat, this "cold water" is pumped around the building to provide air conditioning. This "chilled water" then returns to the evaporator, bringing unwanted heat from the building with it.

power unit:

The power unit is mounted directly to the chiller or detached and mounted to the wall in the technical room with power cables between. The purpose of the power unit is to control the flow of electrical power to the chiller. They typically contain a starter, circuit breakers, speed governor, and power monitoring equipment.

The controls:

The control unit is usually mounted on the cooler. Its purpose is to monitor different aspects of the chiller's performance and control it by making adjustments. The control unit will generate alarms for engineering teams and safely shut down the system to prevent damage to the unit. BMS connections are also often present to allow remote monitoring and control.

water boxes:

Waterboxes are mounted on both the evaporators and condensers of water chillers. The purpose of the water box is to direct the flow and separate the inlet and outlet. Depending on the number of passes through the evaporator and condenser, the waterboxes can have 1 or 2 flanged inlet or outlet ports or can be completely plugged and simply redirect flow to the next pass.
