What are chillers and why are they used in building to provide HVAC air conditioning

All buildings need air conditioning. For smaller buildings this can be provided by air conditioning units but once the building reaches a certain size it becomes cost effective to use a centralized system. Centralized systems use "chillers," which are basically giant air conditioning units, but they work slightly differently due to their size.

Chillers generate chilled water that is used to provide air conditioning for buildings. All buildings generate a great deal of unwanted heat, whether it's solar heat gain from the sun hitting them or from the occupants inside and the equipment they use. This heat must be removed to keep people inside at a comfortable temperature, but also to ensure that electrical and mechanical equipment stays within certain thermal limits or it will fail.

Chillers are usually located in the basement or on the roof. Rooftop chillers tend to be air-cooled, while basement chillers tend to be water-cooled. By "cooled" we mean the method you use to vent unwanted heat to the atmosphere that has been captured in the building. Water coolers will use cooling towers while air coolers will blow air through their condenser, much like an air conditioning unit, to disperse unwanted heat into the atmosphere.

Chillers use refrigerant gas to move unwanted heat between the evaporator and condenser. Cold water is generated in the evaporator and sent through the building by a pump to collect unwanted heat and return it to the evaporator to cool. The refrigerant collects this heat and transfers it to the condenser. The condenser puts this unwanted heat into another circuit which is either pumped to the cooling towers to be sent to the atmosphere or sent to a cooling coil where a fan blows the heat away, much like blowing a hot spoon of soup to cool it down
